Sea Protests

If, during course of the voyage or at a port of refuge, a ship has encountered heavy weather or other misadventure, resulting in damage to the ship herself, her equipment or cargo or other facilities on the shore, or resulting in delays in the voyage, the Master of the ship may at the first port of discharge note, as soon as possible but preferably within  24 hours of arrival, a Sea Protest (also known as a Ship’s protest or Note of Protest) in front of a locally practising Notary Public. Subject to some conditions, a Sea Protest may be used as evidence that any damage caused has been the result of sea perils, rather than the negligence or misconduct of the crew.
